Welcome Back!

Welcome back everyone!  We are looking forward to a great and ACTIVE year at Rivier.  Our school theme of "dance with the Lord" ties into our goal of healthy, active lifestyles, and I look forward to helping you in any way I can!

Tryouts and practices will be starting for some of our teams this week, so listen for announcements and also listen for activities happening at lunch hours in the gym!

Christmas Wishes

A very Merry Christmas to all students and their families!  Hopefully you will take some time to get outside and try some skating, skiing or sledding over the holiday season!
Also, a reminder to all of you in my phys. ed. classes that we are back in the pool right after Christmas break!  Don't forget your swimsuits and towels.  Maybe Santa will put a nice bathing cap in your stocking ;)

Studies prove phys. ed. makes you smarter!

If you would like to start campaigning for more "activity breaks" at school, read this article about
how physical exercise helps to get students intellectually fit.   Apparently,  just 20 minutes of "easy walking"  will increase activity in the math and reading parts of your brain.  So maybe pace around a bit while you're working on that homework!
Who would have thought that getting off the couch and being active could make you smarter? (Other than your phys. ed. teacher, of course.)

Back on dry land!

You are all probably happy to be finished with the pool during this cold weather! We are all back in the gym, with some curling coming up for the seniors in March.

Pool ends this week!!! We are back in the gym starting tuesday. Make sure you find all your gym pieces.

Presentations of bullying poem due today. Three visual changes must be presented. Next class starting literary devices for types of poems.

We read two poems from Crossroads on page 56 and 57. Your creative writing piece is due on Friday and a class was given to type up your written copy.

Read the short story "A heroes Welcome" do questions 1a, b, and c. Have a one page write up on what has your family done that embarrassed you. Also you need to have your observations recorded for Monday. Today we did storyboard mapping of our fairy tale.

Finished song by India Arie and did the cartoon strip "You should wear khakis with that". Assignment given out that is due Monday.

We are currently working on using our senses to articulate what we see, taste, smell, touch, and hear. We are trying to improve our word choice in our writing to make the reader visualize what we see. We are beginning unit 1 of looking inward. Read the short story "The Transformation of Cindy R" from CrossRoads. Write a four sentence summary of what the story is about. Do questions #1a,b,c,and d.

We have finished an analysis of teens in the media and how they are portrayed in print. You need to do the assignment in your media log that was on the bottom of the assignment page. We are now critiquing teens and how they are portrayed in television, and music videos. You will compare Happy Days to 90210 and 2 music videos. You will then have a choice of 2 assignments plus your media log to hand in.

Physed 20 and 30

We are currently in our Physed units right now. Grade 11's your tennis assignment was due Sept 11 and grade 12's your presentation is due on Wed September 18. Exam dates will be set in class.

Media 20

We have just started to look at the types of media we currently use and what we use it for.

English 8M

So far we have done two writing assignments. The first assignment was what you did with your summer, which also included, three things you love about English and three things you dislike. The second writing assignment had the same idea but you had to write it from the perspective of a desk. I look forward to seeing how creative you can be. That writing assignment is due today. Today in class we will be using our senses to expand on our writing when describing people. We will also be looking at expanding our word choice when writing. Pool is Done!!!

Pool is done and we are back in the gym once again. Grade seven and eights will be doing a basketball unit. Grade 9's have started a kinball unit and grade tens and elevens will heading into the weight room. Grade 12's we are going to skip the weight room and instead do some intense metabolic conditioning. Please remember to bring all your gym gear to class!!!
